Weekly Reading - Be Still.
And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42
I have this thing about keeping the house clean, especially if having guests around. This, of course, is not exactly a bad thing, but if you let it get in the way of other things it can be. I have often, when having guests over, been so busy cleaning up and preparing, that when they have left I've suddenly realized that I haven't spent any time with them at all.
Lets examine our spiritual lives and our hearts. Are you a Martha? Or are you a Mary? I have to admit that I have a tendency to lean towards the Martha side, busying myself with organization, sorting, preparing and the list goes on and on. Don't get me wrong organization is all good and well but sometimes it tends to hinder our spiritual lives instead of helping.
If we look at Mary, from the moment Jesus began to speak, she sat at His feet and heard His word. Who would be the more blessed, the more at peace by that encounter? I think we can all agree that it was Mary. Forgetting everything else, forsaking all, she just sat and listened to His word, to His teaching. In order to grow and mature, we must never neglect this part of our spiritual lives, He is our Savior, our reason for being, and yes, we must in all our ways live to serve Him, but we also need to listen to Him.
In Psalm 46:10, it says, "Be still and know that I am God.." I love that verse, all He is asking is for us to put aside everything, our worries, our needs, and just sit before Him in adoration as He so rightly deserves. Can't we see that all these things will become so irrelevant when we are able to gaze, with all our hearts, into His majesty? Jesus knows this about us all, our fickleness and our worrying hearts and that is why He says to Martha, and says to us too, "...you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
